Doctoring the evidence
Between 2004 and 2006, an international group of Visual artists embarked on a Practice-led PhD at Northumbria University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne who came to call themselves the 'All maps welcome research group'. The relatively young field of artistic doctorates required investigation into new ways of conducting research ‘beyond text’ (AHRC, 2007), which were addressed in weekly meetings initiated by the Universities head of artistic research, Professor Chris Dorsett. In 2008 our group organized a national conference (All maps welcome). We have been in close contact throughout the PhD process, sharing the details and challenges of our individual research projects with each other. This closeness has been a distinct privilege as PhD's are usually a solitary experience. In a way, our group has had the benefit of experiencing not just one, but fourteen PhD processes up close. This has proven a valuable knowledge base for all of us. Now, approximately five year after finishing our doctorates, we have spread across the globe and are still in touch and eager to discuss and share new possibilities for artistic research methodologies. The project 'Doctoring the evidence' seeks to extend our knowledge base into the international postgraduate research community.
Doctoring the evidence #3: GARAGE IMAGINARIES
In this 3rd Doctoring the evidence event in Oxford, United Kingdom, Prof. Chris Dorsett and Dr Poyan Yee curated an exhibition of work from the research group and three guest artists. Several meetings and dialogues are innitiated and some international group members traveled to Oxford to collect and generate interventions and dialogue in Oxford Universities Center for Hindu Studies, The Belsyre Garage and the Pit Rivers Museum, where they attended both informal and taught sessions. A catalogue and further material resulting from the research trip will be shared online shortly.

Doctoring the evidence #1: 10 CITIES
This exhibition is the first of a series of travelling exhibitions organized about what a PhD in visual arts may contribute to academia and artistic life. It also provides a base for expanding exchange and discussions around those experiences, connecting to different geographical situations. As the exhibition travels, the stories on the website will become more comprehensive, including those of artists with Doctorates elsewhere whom we invite as guests to exhibit in the show, write down their stories or take part in debates. On each site a theme frames the discussions and contributors will write and deliver papers where possible. It is the group’s intention to use the exhibition to collect and develop knowledge that can be shared on the project website and eventually, a comprehensive publication.
